Alexandrite was first discovered in the early 19th century in the Ural Mountains of Russia, making it a relatively recent addition to the world of gemstones. It was named after Tsar Alexander II of Russia, as its colours—green in daylight and red under incandescent light—mirrored the colours of the Russian imperial flag. The gem quickly gained popularity among the Russian aristocracy and became synonymous with luxury and prestige.

The unique colour-changing phenomenon of alexandrite is due to its rare chemical composition, which features traces of chromium. This impurity causes the gem to absorb certain wavelengths of light, resulting in its distinct green-to-red colour shift. While originally found in Russia, alexandrite deposits have since been discovered in various locations around the world, including Brazil, Sri Lanka, and East Africa.

Location:

Originally discovered in Russia’s Ural Mountains in the 1830s, however, the spectacular Ural Mountain deposits didn’t last forever and are now found in Sri Lanka, East Africa, and Brazil. The newer deposits contain some fine-quality stones, but many display less precise colour change and muddier hues than the nineteenth-century Russian Alexandrites.

One can still find an estate jewellery set with some of the famed Ural Mountain Alexandrites.  They remain the quality standard for this phenomenal gem.
